Ashoka's armies marched on Kalinga in 261 BCE, and what followed became the bloodiest campaign of his reign. By his own account, over 100,000 were killed, 150,000 deported, and countless more lost to the famine and disease that followed in the war's wake. He won the territory. He did not survive the victory as the same man.

In the years after, he did something no emperor before him had done: he had his remorse carved into stone and planted the message across the empire, from Afghanistan to the edges of the Deccan. The edicts name the dead. They name his regret. They tell his own officials to govern with restraint, because the man giving the orders could no longer stomach what conquest cost. Sandstone pillars over 40 feet tall, polished to a mirror shine that has outlasted two thousand monsoons, carved in a script built for common people, not court scholars. This pillar carries that confession.
