On March 12, 1930, Mahatma Gandhi led a 240-mile march from Sabarmati Ashram to the coastal village of Dandi, to protest the British Salt Tax, a law that made it illegal for Indians to produce or sell salt without paying colonial duties. What began as a single act of civil disobedience ignited a nationwide movement and became one of the defining moments of India's independence. A handful of earth changed history.
