Ashoka Stone White

On the edge of the actual Kalinga battlefield, at a site called Dhauli, Ashoka's sculptors carved something unlike any other edict in the empire. Above the inscribed text, the front half of an elephant emerges directly from the natural rock face, trunk raised, as if the animal were stepping out of the stone itself. Historians read it as Gajatame, "the best of elephants," an epithet used for the Buddha.

Carved at the site of the war that broke him, facing out over the very ground where his soldiers had fought, the elephant marks the exact place where a conqueror began to disappear and something closer to a penitent took his place. This stone is that moment, still emerging.
