Salt Receipt Oversized Tee

The back is printed with a large graphic of a crumpled colonial-era receipt, dated 12/03/1930. The word Salt is written across the receipt in multiple Indian languages. Below it are the actual tax amounts levied by the British colonial government and the price of salt per maund as recorded under the Salt Act. 

On March 12, 1930, Mahatma Gandhi led the Salt March from Sabarmati Ashram to the coastal village of Dandi, walking 240 miles over 24 days to protest the British Salt Act. The colonial law made it illegal for Indians to collect or sell salt without paying a tax levied by the Crown on one of the most basic necessities of life. Salt was not a commodity. It was survival. The word for it exists in every Indian language, spoken by every community across the subcontinent, which is precisely why Gandhi chose it as the symbol of resistance. The receipt on this tee records the price of that oppression in the languages of the people who refused to keep paying it.
