The back is printed with a large graphic of a torn salt packet, with bilingual text in Hindi and English reading "salt, a basic necessity, was kept off reach of the people." 

The British Salt Act of 1882 gave the colonial government a complete monopoly over the production and sale of salt across India. Indians living near the coast could not legally collect it from the sea. Communities inland paid inflated prices for something the earth provided freely. Salt was not a luxury. It was survival. When Mahatma Gandhi chose salt as the centrepiece of his 1930 civil disobedience campaign, he understood that no issue would resonate more deeply across every region, language, and class in India. The Salt March that followed became a turning point in the independence movement, demonstrating the power of non-violent resistance to an empire. This packet holds that story.
