After Kalinga, Ashoka turned to Buddhism, not as private comfort but as a public renunciation of the ruler he had been. He sent missionaries as far as Sri Lanka and the Hellenistic world, and rebuilt an empire's philosophy of governance around dhamma: nonviolence, tolerance, and restraint, even in the exercise of power.

Early Buddhist art rarely depicted the Buddha directly. His presence was suggested instead through symbols, an empty seat, a riderless horse, a set of footprints. Ashoka's throne carries that same weight. He never stopped ruling, but the seat he occupied was no longer the seat of a conqueror. It was worn like a robe over something that had already been broken and rebuilt into someone gentler. What's missing from this throne says more than a portrait of the emperor ever could.
