The Indian Peafowl has been India's national bird since 1963. Long before that designation, it held deep significance across Indian civilisation. In Hindu tradition, the peacock is the vahana of Lord Murugan, the god of war and victory, and is closely associated with Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge and the arts. The bird appears throughout ancient Indian poetry, in Mughal miniature paintings, in the stone carvings of Rajasthan, and in the folk songs sung across the subcontinent for centuries. Emperor Jahangir of the Mughal dynasty wrote detailed and admiring accounts of the peacock in his memoirs, the Tuzuk-i-Jahangiri. The throne of the Mughal emperors was known as the Peacock Throne, one of the most celebrated objects in the history of Indian art and craft. The peacock has been a symbol of Indian grace, abundance, and the extraordinary richness of the natural world on the subcontinent for longer than written records can trace.
