Salt was among the most politically charged substances in colonial India. The British Salt Act of 1882 gave the colonial government a complete monopoly over the collection, manufacture, and sale of salt across the entire subcontinent. Indians living near saltwater coastlines could not legally gather it from the sea. Communities in inland regions paid prices inflated by colonial levies on something the earth and sea provided freely. The imposition of a tax on salt was not merely an economic policy. It was a statement of total control over Indian life, reaching into the homes and kitchens of every family regardless of wealth or status. On April 6, 1930, Gandhi picked up a handful of salt at Dandi beach and the world paid attention. These cubes are that story.
