Indians living near saltwater coastlines could not legally gather it from the sea. Communities in inland regions paid prices inflated by colonial levies on something the earth and sea provided freely. The imposition of a tax on salt was not merely an economic policy. It was a statement of total control over Indian life, reaching into the homes and kitchens of every family regardless of wealth or status. On April 6, 1930, Gandhi picked up a handful of salt at Dandi beach and the world paid attention. These cubes are that story.
