The back carries a large watercolor illustration of a Bengal tiger, detailed and expressive, rendered in warm earthy tones.

The Bengal Tiger has been India's national animal since 1973, when Project Tiger was launched to reverse the catastrophic decline of the species caused by colonial-era trophy hunting and decades of habitat destruction. But long before that designation, the tiger was woven deep into the fabric of Indian identity. Tipu Sultan, the ruler of the Kingdom of Mysore in the 18th century, was known throughout the subcontinent as the Tiger of Mysore. He used the tiger as his personal and royal symbol, incorporating it into his throne, his weapons, his architecture, and his armour, and his resistance to British expansion made him one of the most formidable opponents the East India Company ever faced. Tiger motifs also appear on ancient Indus Valley seals, in Chola bronze sculpture, in Mughal court paintings, and throughout Indian art and literature as an enduring symbol of strength, sovereignty, and the untamed power of the land itself.
